Make me an angel that flies from Montgom’ry
Make me a poster of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing that I can hold on to
To believe in this living is just a hard way to go
Angel from Montgomery – John Prine
Our dreams and desires, they consume us. In rare moments, we revel in them, but mostly we worry, obsess and sometimes even whine about them. It’s easy to feel like “it” isn’t happening or that our dreams are too far away to ever come true. I understand. My own desire seems so huge and important. I imagine my life full of love, friendship, adventure and darn good work, …and I always only feel part way there; so I totally get it!
But there’s another part of me that peeks through, maybe on an evening walk when I’m tired of thinking, when I’ve let go of trying and a feeling washes over me of myself becoming the life I imagined. It is in those moments, I feel like I am flying. Not holding on to the past or where I’m going, but soaring somewhere in between and I’m okay.
Janice Campbell, creator of the radio show, Receive Your Life says, that “Desire is the expression of our values – the essence and goodness of what we are. Desires are how we bring Heaven to Earth.” She says, “What you love is what you are and what you want to share with others.”
If that’s true (and I believe it is) it’s way more important to believe in Who we are and what we have to give the world than it is to wonder why our dreams haven’t yet come true. Because I believe WHO we are is what we discover along the way.
So even though it might not seem like what’s going on right now is part of our long term plans, we are always becoming the person we need to really be happy and live out our purpose. The dreams and desires we carry around with us, rather than being something we have to chase, are really who we are! And all the time, we are growing into them. Every second of every day we are becoming the dream and fulfilling the desires, so take your time. Everything is playing out perfectly.
Whenever you are low and feeling the urge to ask, “When,.. when will it be my turn?”
Don’t fall into despair. Grab yourself by the wrist and issue yourself this reminder,
“NOW! The dream is happening right now and if I don’t pay attention, I’ll miss the very life I came here to live.”
Dreams are not here and gone. We can never actually “reach” them because they are the fabric of our being. Hold onto the idea that YOU are the dream, You are God’s big dream – there is nothing in between you and what you imagine. You are it! It’s already yours. Just go live it one day at a time. Spread your wings and enjoy the gentle lift of the wind beneath you, taking you home.
